The Music Thing Modular Workshop System in its open carry case

A hands-on workshop with Tom Whitwell

Join the Museum of Synthesisers for an afternoon of sound exploration with Tom Whitwell, the designer behind Music Thing Modular.

This four-hour workshop is a chance to get hands-on with the Workshop System: a compact modular synthesiser designed by Tom for making and experimenting with electronic sound.

Working in small groups, you'll explore the instruments, make sounds together and develop your own ideas, with Tom there to guide you. The afternoon will finish with groups playing back what they've created and listening to each other's work.

There's room to follow your curiosity, try different connections and discover how other people approach the same instrument.

What to expect

  • An introduction to the Music Thing Modular Workshop System.
  • Hands-on exploration of sound and patching: the connections that let different parts of the synthesiser work together.
  • Time to experiment and create in small groups.
  • Guidance and conversation with Tom throughout.
  • A chance to share what you've made with the group.
